Cannabis Reclassification May Bring Benefits to Medicare Recipients

The White House has issued a directive to expedite the reclassification of cannabis, which may lead to certain coverage for Medicare recipients. This change could also improve scientific research on the cannabis plant.

Cannabis is a group of plants that includes both marijuana and hemp. While "marijuana" often carries negative connotations, the term "cannabis" is preferred when discussing marijuana-related topics due to its broader scope.

Medicare recipients may be among the first to benefit from this change, as President Donald Trump's executive order directs the Justice Department to speed up the approval process for reclassifying cannabis from a Schedule I to a Schedule III drug.

As a Schedule I drug, cannabis is considered a substance with "no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse." However, as a Schedule III drug, it would be classified as having "a moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence."

While the reclassification process may face legal challenges and implementation delays, one aspect of the proposed changes could provide financial relief for adults 65 years and older who use cannabis-based products.

Cannabis and Older Adults

The executive order may allow Medicare recipients to be reimbursed by Medicare for up to $500 per year for qualifying cannabinoid (CBD)-based products, starting as early as April 1. This could provide significant financial benefits for older adults who use these products.

A recent study found that 14% of people 65 years and older reported using a CBD product in the prior year, highlighting the growing popularity of cannabis-based products among this age group.

Sherry Yafai, MD, an emergency medicine physician and founder and medical director of The RELEAF Institute in Los Angeles, notes that the reimbursements would be highly beneficial for older adults. "Seniors who are struggling with chronic pain or other conditions may find relief through cannabis-based products," Dr. Yafai explains.

It's essential to note that Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans may not cover these reimbursements. We recommend checking with your specific insurance provider for more information.
