**Measles Cases on the Rise: What You Need to Know**

The United States has seen a significant increase in measles cases over the past few years, with 2025 marking a 33-year high in reported cases. This surge in cases puts the country at risk of losing its measles elimination status, which it has held since 2000.

What does this mean for our community?

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) will be evaluating U.S. measles data in 2026 to determine whether the country's exemption status should be revoked. This decision comes after Canada lost its exemption status due to ongoing outbreaks in November 2025.

Why are measles cases rising?

According to experts, the main reason for the increase in measles cases is declining vaccination rates in the U.S. and high measles circulation globally. In fact, about 93% of reported cases were in unvaccinated people or those with unknown vaccination status.

The Risks of Measles

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases on the planet, with people who contract it able to spread the virus to others before even showing symptoms. In 2025, there were three reported deaths and 245 hospitalizations attributed to measles outbreaks in the U.S.
